The birth of Bollywood America, presently the most prestigious and coveted collegiate filmi-fusion championship competition in North America, was the result of a debate in an apartment near the Penn State University campus. Ten years ago, desi dance teams competed at various competitions across the country and claimed first place. Though all teams were deserving of first place wins at these competitions, there was no definitive champion; and, this is exactly what the debate was about: which team was truly better, Penn State JaDhoom or University of California – Los Angeles Nashaa? While they agreed to disagree about which team was “the best”, these friends decided to come together to create an annual platform to crown a Bollywood Fusion champion. With some of the best minds and 'competition planning extraordinaires' in the desi dance circuit, Bollywood America became a reality in 2010, taking place in Boston, Massachusetts. The first crowned champions were the Wanted Ashiqz.
Since then, Bollywood America has grown from championship dance competition to an inspiration to people of all ages. Year after year, the Bollywood America stage has been graced with incredible and awe-inspiring talent from industry professionals, collegiate teams, and local dance schools. While Bollywood America is a dance competition at its very core, it is also an opportunity for the diverse south Asian community to come together and be connected by their passion for dance.
